📣 🚨 🪩 I'm delighted to announce "Funding The Web: a covenant for browsers, search, and people", new work from yours truly generously supported by D//F: ftw.fund. It's a complicated topic but it only impacts the whole web, so please bear with me a little! 🧵

Much worse: this system defunds the whole of the web, and notably the media. Thanks to its monopoly, Google charges *far* higher prices for ads than it normally could and gets a much higher share of web marketing channels than it should. That's money, in the tens of billions, not flowing to the web.
The browser/search world has specific requirements that make WISE different from SWIFT, but what SWIFT gives us is proof of feasibility for the kind of governance we need. But browsers benefit from cooperating to maintain Google's monopoly — why would they change?

I could go on — there's a *lot* more in the report, including a demo of better choice screen. The key point is this: the digital sphere is complex, but we have the tools, often from other domains, to find solutions that make it work in the general interest and open digital markets up to competition.
