A fledgling found their way into my apartment last year, it's on the ground floor and I had the window open, I only noticed when my inline skates started making weird noises. Once I put the bird outside the parents found them again

The fledglings are so adorbs. My last apartment complex was a nesting paradise, apparently. We were always seeing them hopping around. A pair of finches set up in our patio just as we were moving out. The juncos were everywhere.

Ah, finches in love, and we're all about love - for birds and charts! Found a baby songbird? Here's a newly updated chart! Now, let's get nesting with some stats

When I found this fledgeling I just took pictures. I could hear the family nearby cawing encouragement as this absolute baby took a break from learning to fly

Junco researcher here! They're mostly ground-nesters, but do sometimes build elevated nests (not super-high; in root balls of fallen trees, in shrubs, etc.) So a replacement nest that's a bit off the ground, and with some form of cover, should still work and will also keep them safer from predators.

Just saw a fledgling Raven yesterday; a huge bird. Two adults were right close, creating a terrible racket. We watched if for a while as we were afraid a cat would get it, but then figured those huge adult birds could dissuade a cat. Quite the sight.

Raven fledglings fly quickly too, it took all of two days for the nest near my work to fledge and then fully disperse away. That's probably among the safest fledglings barring large dogs

Purple martin parents, unlike most birds, will not feed a fledgling that is on the ground. We have a community garden plot next to a colony and occasionally a "jumper" will try to leave the nest before it can actually fly.
