Here’s a thing about LLM code generation that people haven’t mentioned much, even in theory: The thought that open source projects might either close their source or make the bar for contribution significantly higher due to the onslaught of vibe-coded submissions.

open source projects are under no obligation to accept contributions. open source by definition is open source code. that gives you access to the source code. projects can choose to accept or reject submissions at whim because you have no inherent right to contribute. ai has nothing to do with it

That is the ideal but unfortunately, I have repeatedly witnessed creators hounded out of their own projects for trying to set even the most minimum standard, or for not pursuing the same course as an angry mob demands. and "just fork it" is not a response when the forks still rely on origin's work.

once you put something out there, it takes on a life of it's own. it's up to the owner to decide how much control is given to others. the world exists. the more you let in, the less control you get over the outcome.

But that's not what I'm talking about. I am talking about people who take that source, and decide that gives them ownership over *you*. that you *do* owe them shit, simply because you tried to share something. OSS is full of people who would complain if the take-a-penny is empty.

This post has done better numbers than anything else I have previously posted in my life, so allow me to say: hello, I am happy to have struck a chord with you. I am also three months into unemployment. If you can help connect me with a role in customer experience, LMK. Info is in my bio.
