if you don't mind some ideas: NPCs can react to each other and players with simple icons in bubbles. The actual conversations exist in the player's imagination. for example A: 🐈 B: ❤️ person B likes cats? likes A for liking cats? A: 👋 B: 😠 person B angry? hates A? A:‼️ B:❔ A:💬 B:🤷‍♂️ you now 😀
