Don't think it's sunk in for people in the UK that we will feel this *next* summer. This summer was just a warm up

The rise in Niño 3.4 region sea surface temperatures over the past few weeks has been nothing short of astonishing. We are now hotter than any days during the 1997/1998 super El Niño event, and we are still many months from the peak.

Counter intuitively I think that el nino’s actually make colder winters more likely in the uk. For whatever reason it doesn’t affect our summers all that strongly and any affects can have lags of a year or more, making things even murkier.
