I’m still routinely intimated by some people in tech. Everything I publish gets negative comments to some degree. People telling me I’m dumbing stuff down too much, or I’m wrong about stuff and shouldn’t be writing about it. Putting yourself out there eventually guarantees this will happen to you.

Since we're among close friends, a confession: when I was in college, I experienced some hateful engineers in the Linux community, and it kept me away from open source in my prime programming years. Sometimes the difference between an annoyance and a valued contributor is kindness and mentorship.

I will never understand this. I am sure there are a billion articles a day published that I'm not interested in, or disagree with, but who on earth then takes the time to be abusive to the person writing it? Especially as 99% of such content is FREE.

At least with the folks in communities like HN and Reddit, the feeling I get is that they’re protective of some imagined sanctity of the space. My content is colourful, attempts to be welcoming to people who don’t know the topic, has cartoon dogs in it. Some people see that as an attack. It’s silly.

They’re a very small minority. It’s a shame that the screen real estate taken up by the number of upvotes is vastly overshadowed by the area occupied by even a single negative comment.
