I’m still routinely intimated by some people in tech. Everything I publish gets negative comments to some degree. People telling me I’m dumbing stuff down too much, or I’m wrong about stuff and shouldn’t be writing about it. Putting yourself out there eventually guarantees this will happen to you.

Since we're among close friends, a confession: when I was in college, I experienced some hateful engineers in the Linux community, and it kept me away from open source in my prime programming years. Sometimes the difference between an annoyance and a valued contributor is kindness and mentorship.

I will never understand this. I am sure there are a billion articles a day published that I'm not interested in, or disagree with, but who on earth then takes the time to be abusive to the person writing it? Especially as 99% of such content is FREE.

At least with the folks in communities like HN and Reddit, the feeling I get is that they’re protective of some imagined sanctity of the space. My content is colourful, attempts to be welcoming to people who don’t know the topic, has cartoon dogs in it. Some people see that as an attack. It’s silly.

They’re a very small minority. It’s a shame that the screen real estate taken up by the number of upvotes is vastly overshadowed by the area occupied by even a single negative comment.

This happens to me almost daily. I am a walking definition of the ”dog in lab coat”-meme most of the time. ”Dumbing things down” is an art. Teaching is a passion _and_ an art. Making something complex simple, doesn’t mean it’s easy — in fact it’s quite the opposite.

The fact that you choose to do it, and very well too I might add, speaks volumes about you as a person, at least in my book! I just happen to know a lot of people agree.

Try to love the haters. They sharpen us if we use them as a possible external viewpoint. If they're saying something meaningful, accept it no matter how it was said. If they're not, move on. Over time it will sting less and less. I, for one, have immense respect for your talent and enthusiasm.

There’s definitely some useful criticism layered under the meanness from time to time. Some people, though, are very simply cunts. Thanks for the kind words, appreciate you 🫶

For each of these haters there are dozens of people like me that really appreciates the effort and kindness you put into everything. Maybe we make less noise, but we’re here. Fuck the haters.

I stopped reading feedbacks long ago. Most anon sites bring up the worst in people. On reddit and hn, all you have is a handle. So some people feel like they can do whatever.

I am 17 years in tech and your content is brilliant and enlightening. I hope to read way more 'dumb' content from you, so I finally will get it. Btw, I would probably kill to just be able to make half as great visualizations as you do. Let the haters hate.
