My grandfather, Roman Anthony “Slim” Sarwark, founded Sarwark Motor Sales back in 1942 in Phoenix. Son of Polish immigrants, Roman moved to Phoenix from Indiana because it was better than living in a tuberculosis sanitarium and waiting to die in an institution. He married Ruth Van de Beuken.

Ruth and Roman both had big hearts. They raised four kids, Susan, Helen, Frank (my father), and Mary Ann. They built a car dealership, a finance company, endowed churches, founded clubs and created a mid-century modern picture of success, pillars of the Polish Catholic community in Phoenix.

A couple of years ago, handling the affairs of the Sarwark family businesses became my responsibility. The timing was not great: the auto industry is past its peak, buy-here, pay-here auto financing in Arizona is less viable than ever before due to some legal changes in the debt collection laws.

Fascinating history! I suspect the "buy here, pay here" model has always entailed pretty high repo overhead. I only financed a car that way once, and made my payments ... but the car I bought had just come back in from a previous buyer who didn't.

When providing credit to people without a history of paying or with a history of not paying, building in the cost of repossession, sale of the repossessed collateral, and pursuit of deficiency balances is part of the financial model. When the last one becomes nonviable, everything crumbles.
