I prefer the first version with the fence post included on the left - it bookends/brackets the composition nicely on that side. Feels a bit lacking without it, to me.

No worries. Thinking about it a bit more - I guess if the interest of the image is the "odd-but-matching" relationship between the object and context, removing too much of the context weakens it a little bit?
