Can a biofilm disperse by budding?

A new long-term study tracked Staphylococcus aureus biofilms inside tissue-like matrices. Instead of only spreading across a surface, embedded colonies formed compact structures with small buds pinching outward.

The budding mechanism was observed in a model system. This paper is not direct footage from a patient and does not show that every implant infection behaves this way.
