Hazbin Hotel discourse is so weird because it seems to be far more people complaining about the problematic unhealthy sexual dynamics - the most interesting choices in the damn thing - and far less people pointing out the storytelling is actively incompetent.

I've held back on criticizing it because the fandom/hatedom are so exhausting. The sister show on YouTube is better though, so I have to wonder how much of the problem stems from it being a DeviantART teen's dream project vs from them working with Prime and not knowing how many seasons they'd get.

It's like every episode has another Glup Shitto with their own fan base going back years, haha. Ironically, I thought the pilot handled it just fine! So it was a real surprise when the first episode opened with 2 monologues of set up and SO many characters at once.

I'm reminded that the loudest Hazbin Hotel fan I know is a guy who otherwise only watches shows for children, and thinks they're morally righteous for not watching shows like Breaking Bad. And that sounds about right for Hazbin Hotel fans.

Because there's just that whole sub-genre of adult animation where it feels like it's written for 12-year-olds instead of actual adults, and they just say "fuck" in every sentence to compensate for that.

Characters don't just turn up to fill roles in the narrative. Clusters of them do. It's not just one media demon, it's several. Why? I dunno, aesthetic? It's like keeping track of seventeen polycules as they move around a bar, occasionally swapping members, and some of them have beef.
