What I desperately miss about MSN Messenger wasn't being 15, or nudges, or screen names or anything, it was the fact that when you weren't online, you couldn't be messaged, and if you didn't want to make yourself known you could Appear Offline. Oh and no Read Receipts. Modern DMs are torture.

Appear Offline was like. 60% of my existence on MSN Sometimes you wanna chat but not like Have everyone know lmao (also offline messages became a thing but basically were just like an answering machine which honestly, helpful)

I liked the daily welcome messages from people, because I'd always disconnect & close irc when I was done for the day. Getting a lot of "hello" when I next logged in.

I have a compulsion to do the following: - Respond to messages in a timely manner (polite) - Get the Unread count down to 0 Combining the two leads to absolute burnout when I just need some quiet time without notifications bugging me, because they're always *there*.
