this is a great proposal and one that i think is worth studying. sound transit is already over-committed to light rail for the “spine” service, but building ballard/west seattle rail as an automated light *metro* makes an incredible amount of sense. our neighbours to the north have proved it.

Sound Transit can halve the cost of light rail to Ballard and West Seattle by building them as a connected automated light rail line with slimmer stations, according to two transit experts who have launched the Sound Transit Now campaign. Guest op-ed: www.theurbanist.org/op-ed-reconn...

even if you’re skeptical, this is a well-researched proposal. we don’t have to double down on the system we’ve already got and already ask to be too many things.

don’t miss the notes about interlining our existing light rail network for better operations, too. there’s a lot of possibilities to unlock here with a less stupid build-out of ballard/west seattle.

also, it goes unstated but any future rail expansion within metro, non-suburban seattle definitely makes more sense with an automated light metro. and we are going to need more rail in metro seattle as we grow

it’s 2026. in a more perfect world, there are at least two rapidride routes that should be under serious consideration for replacement by an elevated automated light metro by 2050 at latest: • E Aurora • H Delridge/Burien (let’s use the West Seattle bridge solution for this one too.)
