Baffling how many people forget or refuse to use muting and blocking. It is not a weakness. It is healthy for your sanity. You do not owe problematic people your time.

exactly I noticed that a lot on discord. people getting shamed or ridiculed for blocking/ignoring people, because it's weak or something. like... mind your own business. idk, I think these people are just mad because they get blocked a lot because they are just mean and unlikeable.

Thats why I love bluesky. I just thought ai accounts avoided this site. No, I just forgot I subscribed to a block list and just never see it. Same with certain politics and things i just dont like. I feel like I would be drowning on twitter in bad news

Real. As others have already mentioned, muting words does wonders, too. Still having trouble with posts that have images I don't want on my feed, but I don't come across those too often. I typically just block the accounts that'll post images with no text / alt text so their post doesn't get hidden.

is like people don't know what transform a social media is. Something or someone is frustrating, terrorizing or simply you don't want to watch, hear o read? Silence or block, is THAT simple, we could be better if everyone did that

Seriously, sanitise your feeds. It's like washing your hands IRL, humankind needs to learn to use social media safely. "Social media is so bad for you" - me, with a feed full of cool art and cute girls "Huh??"

Blocking for anyone I find unpleasant, bots/spam, or too confusing to get a read on what kind of person they are Muting for when blocking is too much for accounts that I don't find unpleasant but not my choice of exposure

Feel like I must explain by what I mean by "too confusing" Sometimes I see someone crack an ironic joke under a political post, but it sounds too genuine. Go look at their profile and they're not clear on what they believe in politically, but resume this "edging" through irony humor

Muting is great because it doesn't need to be a whole thing and you can even do it for a short while to people you otherwise don't have a problem with because you just need to wait out a moment they're having that you can't be dealing with yourself right this second

no literally. simply being able to walk away from a conversation is fantastic when youre irl muting someone is the closest we have when online. its not a big deal. genuinely. sometimes things really dont need to be an argument or a fight.

One of the consequences of being in an era where people are either so conflict averse or conflict *hungry* is that neither really knows how to healthily walk away from conflict and guage whether or not it was even worth the stress to begin with People do gotta learn to just mute and take a breather

isnt the mute like a more extreme version of the block? basically blocks them without them knowing. so sounds like something i would only wanna use if the other person was block evading. a version of a mute that just hides their posts but still lets them talk to you would be cool.

What you just said would be cool is exactly how it works They can still see your posts and interact with you, you just don't have to see it if you don't want to, that's how the mute here works

oh really? nice! i guess what i mean is something closer to the middle like... i dont see their posts unless they @ me. and i do still see DMs. is that how it works? or maybe i can see them if i seek them out but i dont get notifications?

Big fan of the block and mute. I talk to folks sometimes who complain about wasting hours of their time arguing with some online troll. Why did you do that? You don't owe anyone your time and attention. Set your own boundaries and enforce them.

I'm glad at least part of the internet has moved past the idea that "having to block someone means you lost the internet argument." It was always a toxic mindset, but it's becoming more acceptable to block people instead of starting or continuing arguments (at least on Bluesky).

Mute filters are also huge! Be cavalier with them, it seriously saves your mental health not seeing every single persons' every single thought about [insert person or topic here you care about but don't need to constantly think about]
