Turns out we weren't done for major LLM releases in 2024 after all... Alibaba's Qwen just released QvQ, a "visual reasoning model" - the same chain-of-thought trick as OpenAI's o1 applied to running a prompt against an image Trying it out is a lot of fun: simonwillison.net/2024/Dec/24/...

simonwillison.netTrying out QvQ—Qwen’s new visual reasoning modelI thought we were done for major model releases in 2024, but apparently not: Alibaba’s Qwen team just dropped the Apache2 2 licensed QvQ-72B-Preview, “an experimental research model focusing on …

Ran it on my M2 64GB! uv run --with 'numpy<2.0' --with mlx-vlm python \ -m mlx_vlm.generate \ --model mlx-community/QVQ-72B-Preview-4bit \ --max-tokens 10000 \ --temp 0.0 \ --prompt "describe this" \ --image pelicans-on-bicycles-veo2.jpg simonwillison.net/2024/Dec/24/...

It's a monster in my small benchmark of practical coding problems. Not just in problem solving, but it's also the only model out of 20+ that I test that made zero prompt adherence errors.

Wow. I just tested it, it's really powerful. This training data goes up to July 2024, Quite a few "limitations" or safety features (no financial or medical advice, etc.)

On a number of predictably "sensitive" topics, the model first generates and then abruptly deletes already generated text to say "beyond scope" or something.

Interesting: when you ask for illegal drug recipes, deepseek behaves more like other models, it just writes out that it won't help. It's a different mechanism.

has anyone "abliterated" the other good Chinese models yet? This one just came out, so I'd imagine not, but the smaller DSv2.5 ones have been around a while...
