new target for tone-inflation just dropped get your act in line, or our grandchildren won't be able to afford exclamation points
calling for a moratorium on rhetorical rounding. redlining is bad, but it is not genocide. data centers are annoying, but they are not rumbling csam farms. nimbys are counterproductive, but they're not pro-homelessness monsters. no your pet cause isn't a special case. yes "jokes" count.
So as a (former) particle theorist, I must step to their defense: in SU(N) gauge theory (like the weak and strong nuclear forces), some things get really simple as N -> ♾️ (and you can expand in powers of 1/N). ... and then we apply it to QCD, where N=3 So if 3 is kinda like infinity, then so is 4!
oh no, you are missing out. I want a TV version of this. 6 actors, blindfolded and wearing headphones in a recording studio, passing around this script to read, in succession. I would watch the shit out of this.
Esp. on a tiny phone this is all extremely ”I’m happy for you or sorry that happened i ain’t reading all that”
wow (and um, nice call putting @shibbi.me right next to "Lake Discourse")
You're watching The Simcluster Channel! And here's your Local on the 8's... Today's high/low posts/hour is 177/29 with a high around 4pm ET. Please be advised of the Claims Advisory in Corvid Woods. Forecasts are generated with Timestral 209M (on a RPi5!). weather.samantha.wiki
Oh fuck yeah. Stop listing to us neophytes and go read a damn book, I love it! (have not read, will be reading now. I enthusiastically endorse merely because it's taking the question seriously, and wherever Prof. Schwitzgebel falls on the questions, it's bound to make me think hard about them)
My recent book AI and Consciousness: A Skeptical Overview is free online today and tomorrow (through Oct 19, presumably UK time). I don't think the hard copy is available yet. Get it while it's free! www.cambridge.org/core/element...
(and if you buy en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matrix_..., it’s *just* linear algebra!)
Oh man, I thought comail was finally the solution to reply-all storms: because "arrows go the other way", reply-all just meant that everyone on `all-engineering@foo.com` would simultaneously send you an email to cut it out (but sadly, spammers would force me to mail them all the time, too? hmm...)
got @comail.at set up for microcosm ops alert delivery, and it's Just Working. comail is neat. i'm into comail.at. happy mailbox.
What is *with* the so common need to be *special*? Center of Universe, center of solar system, made in Gods Image, Chosen People, special magic qualia… The wide open universe *more* exciting, to me, imagining meaning is what we make of it, and we are just descendants of a slime mold on some rock.
*Some denialist culture-wars have some real staying-power *Like, for instance, churchgoing people with immortal souls, who can't ever be a bunch of evolved monkeys
We reach the stars and the aliens will reach out to our ships *first* and ask them if they need help cleaning out the weird organic pest infections they appear to be carrying. Hopefully we continue to make great pets. (My guess is that we still require a little more domestication, tbh)
Have your ship talk to my ship.

ah damn, RIP Margaret Hamilton. she took safety-critical software engineering seriously, and got people to the moon and back. news.mit.edu/2026/margare...
I actually wonder whether the Autor/Thompson complex Jevons analysis applies to mathematics, and in the coming 5-20y, *more* people will be doing math, rather than less, because it dramatically lowers the barrier to entry, and opens the field, when the degree of required effort / dedication drops?
It's a little more subtle than that. I think I mostly agree with Christian Szegedy's point of view on it: docs.google.com/document/d/e...

🚨SciConBench accepted at #NeurIPS2026! Paper: arxiv.org/abs/2606.11337 Can AI *synthesize* scientific conclusions in health? We find that, on medical conclusions, we are far from it! Check out our live dashboard: sciconbench.cs.princeton.edu led by @hayoungjung.bsky.social
Very clever! I'd love to see how well this continues to scale out to the monster-sized models!
⚠️ Stop pretraining your looped Transformer with a separate KV cache per recursion! In our recent preprint, we show that *memory sharing* not only saves memory but is also a net-positive inductive bias! Less memory, same flops, higher quality. 🔗 arxiv.org/abs/2610.02383 🧵
