What are we DOING here? We're just meant to sit and act like this insane plagiarism and climate threat that requires more money than anything has ever cost is worth it? Are we meant to pretend that ChatGPT is worth this aimless, meaningless destruction of capital and our environment? For what?

Putting aside the real lack of any killer generative AI app or the very clear diminishing returns, it costs billions of dollars to train and run a model that costs billions more than it makes with no path to profitability of any kind. What are we doing? What is going on? Have we all gone mad?

It seems these smaller companies are using the larger models to train their models, which is much cheaper and more efficient. Open AI, Google etc take a hit there to lead the race.

Point being, just because Deepseeks latest model was cheap and energy efficient - doesn't mean OpenAI's will be. History predicts quite the opposite.

Yeah that's absolutely true - even more so given their new focus on inference-time scaling, where they apparently burned over $1m just for a single (high profile) benchmark simonwillison.net/2024/Dec/20/...
