Huh oh. As a committed anti-conspiracy-theorist for the "phones listen to your microphone and targeted ads based on what you say" thing I can tell this is going to be exhausting

I think probably 95% of speculation that your phone is secretly listening to you is overblown, but man the tech industry really does not do itself any favors with that 5% arstechnica.com/tech-policy/...

This has happened to me waaaaaaay too often to be mere coincidence. Especially for topics I have just talked about for the first. And! This has happened to other people around me way too often too! Like if it happened to me once or twice, maybe coincidence. It's been countless times.

I haven't actually tried to prove it (for myself I don't really have to). It's not like that rare case when something made a sound and it seemed like a ghost but actually there was an explanation to it if you investigated it. This ad stuff is waaaaaaay more common than that. All coincidences?

How many times yesterday / this week / this month did you say something out loud near a device and NOT see a targeted ad relating to the thing you said?

A lot, because I usually don't use Google products with advertising. It only happens to me with Google products, f.e. YouTube. Most of the time I'm on Bluesky, entertainment sites like Hulu/Disney, or other apps that don't have Google advertising.

It's odd that when it happens, it's also a less often case when I'm on a site like YouTube. I've never had it happen on non-Google apps. I also don't see any ads at all on my Apple devices, so doesn't happen there.
