in early 2000s microsoft ceo said open source was “cancer”. now open source is common sense i wonder how long it’ll take for open social to become common sense

what do i mean by “open social” - either open source or enough is open source that a motivated team can reconstruct in a few months - data isnt tied to apps. it’s tied to you and can be (re)interpreted by new and old apps - big players can’t hurt the ecosystem without destroying own value

Not to let my beard show too much but the second and third points have more to do with free software than open source, and free software ultimately lost the mindshare it had developed around the same time open source was being called a cancer.

pragmatism and incremental always wins these kinds of fights imo. you want the new thing to be something someone motivated can just slip in. lessons for the current moment too

I'm with you on that and ultimately agree. The world would have been much better off with a 20% better balance between F/OSS ethos which are actually two different sets of values that overlap. So there's an opportunity to strike a new balance here, because it's ultimately builders that grow.
