It's a weird world where the shittier a piece of software looks, the more I trust it. The fancy looking ones? They're going to steal my data or extort me in pricing or just not work. Crappy looking tools made by some random dude? This shit is going to get the job done and do nothing else.

The most reliable piece of software you’ve ever used and its “About” menu is a popup with a 3 frame gif of a cat from 1996

“How do I connect to this remote server?” “Why that’s simple! You download Putty and summon the elder gods of Windows 95 UI design”

But the more it looks like it's trying to steal your bank details, the less likely it's actually trying to! The people trying to steal stuff learned looking nice helps.

Slightly unrelated, but I always love how SQLite, used in billions (trillions?) of installations is basically maintained by 3 guys, don't allow outside contributions, ridiculously well tested. Website looks just as dated That xkcd cartoon with the stack of bricks is so true
