question to younger people in tech: how do you get hired (the initial step, to a hiring manager) these days? my understanding is job applications don’t work. What does?

You have two options (for industry jobs) - research: be miles ahead by consuming as much research (bleeding-edge gives you bonus points) pertaining to your field as possible or nepotism - tech: just nepotism Everyone around my age who has gotten a job recently falls into one of these twocategories

To be fair, nepotism will technically get you a job anywhere so I might be answering in a biased way because of how disheatened I feel about personal merit not being enough to get a job anymore
