This is the kind of stuff I'm talking about. "Programming is art and art is the most human thing ever" okay so is working at a cannery or being a mechanic also "art" or is it not? If your principles hinge on this I think that's an important question blog.glyph.im/2026/10/prog...

blog.glyph.imProgramming Isn’t SpecialArtists understand that AI is bad for art. Why don’t programmers understand that we are artists?

"Proletarianization" of computer programmers through eg AI is an opportunity to remove the veil and realize there is no actual "higher form" of labor. There is the working class, and then there is a mode of production that alienates them all equally. The charade is over.

"the journalist and novelist are no more important than each other" is the easy case. Do you see journalism as more important than fruit picking, than canning, than sewing usable clothes? The belief in "higher" forms of labor is reactionary and people hate admitting it

"Art is actually an insanely humanist and inherently progressive force" is also just some shit made up by French perverts from the 18th century, similar to concepts like "human rights". Much historical art was mostly about venerating God, not channeling our universalist humanist ideas

I am the first to admit that the acceptance and learning to absorb art when I was young (my first roommate was an art history major) was deeply impactful and profound to me. But the idea that art is an innately progressive force is nothing more than ideology cloaked by modern norms.

My late father was a mathematics teacher on the side but his main job was being a mechanic using drill presses, lathes larger than most mid-sized bedrooms. Is his work more or less important than computer programming? Is it more "pure" and "human"? The entire concept is fucking nonsense

As much as I do not believe in individual virtue signalling, and I've always claimed that tech workers were working-class people like any others, I also hope that we're gonna be supportive of communities who might take action to defend themselves and support their community.

I agree about organizing to protect ourselves from the maw of capital. But IMO part of doing that is abandoning these incoherent frameworks. The article itself wants to repudiate that idea coding is special and then ends admitting it's "art, the most human thing of all"; sounds pretty special to me!

If a bunch of people decide to attack a datacentre construction site because it's endangered the water source of their community, I hope that if our analysis is AI is just capitalism evolving, I hope we'll also be there for people who revolt against extraction & to protect their health as workers

Reminds me of a story I remember of an early 20th century labor organizer who said something to the effect of "If someone accuses you of stealing a church and its steeple is sticking out of your pocket, you deny it all the same".
