Minor potentate so charmed by a mechanical bird whose movement and song is so lifelike that they demand the bird or else have a tradesperson executed is a beautiful story thst echoes through time.

Probably one of the most important things you can do with your life is create a lot of Intellectual Property. You can't have any property or be intellectual when you die so you need to do it while you still can.

The author does this interesting thing of quoting Berger to describe how certain kinds of labor are mystified over others for no reason, and then appears to decide that the solution is to apply that mystification to everything equally instead??

If a bunch of people decide to attack a datacentre construction site because it's endangered the water source of their community, I hope that if our analysis is AI is just capitalism evolving, I hope we'll also be there for people who revolt against extraction & to protect their health as workers

This is the kind of stuff I'm talking about. "Programming is art and art is the most human thing ever" okay so is working at a cannery or being a mechanic also "art" or is it not? If your principles hinge on this I think that's an important question blog.glyph.im/2026/10/prog...

blog.glyph.imProgramming Isnโ€™t SpecialArtists understand that AI is bad for art. Why donโ€™t programmers understand that we are artists?

"Proletarianization" of computer programmers through eg AI is an opportunity to remove the veil and realize there is no actual "higher form" of labor. There is the working class, and then there is a mode of production that alienates them all equally. The charade is over.

I am the first to admit that the acceptance and learning to absorb art when I was young (my first roommate was an art history major) was deeply impactful and profound to me. But the idea that art is an innately progressive force is nothing more than ideology cloaked by modern norms.

My late father was a mathematics teacher on the side but his main job was being a mechanic using drill presses, lathes larger than most mid-sized bedrooms. Is his work more or less important than computer programming? Is it more "pure" and "human"? The entire concept is fucking nonsense

"the journalist and novelist are no more important than each other" is the easy case. Do you see journalism as more important than fruit picking, than canning, than sewing usable clothes? The belief in "higher" forms of labor is reactionary and people hate admitting it

"Art is actually an insanely humanist and inherently progressive force" is also just some shit made up by French perverts from the 18th century, similar to concepts like "human rights". Much historical art was mostly about venerating God, not channeling our universalist humanist ideas

I joke to people that "Learning about political economy/history/marxism is the [long pause] worst thing I have ever done for myself." It removes the veil of delusion. Reconfigurations of society/labor and their means of producing human life are not "fun" and you, individually, are not relevant

It is extremely funny the amount of inhabitants of e.g. lobsters who call themselves "leftist" while rejecting the basic ideas of historical materialism. it makes more sense when you realize it's 99.9% libs who want head pats and can't get those by calling themselves capitalist liberals.

To be fair I don't even think being an average lib (capitalist) is that bad. But many people on the internet, regardless of professed political ideology, seem to have a politics I would summarize as "Please return everything in America back to 1975" but with iPhones or whatever.

I just did this with EmbeddingGemma 2 as well, and it only came out like 3 hours ago. (To be fair the architecture is already known)

It's insane but now you can just buy access to a frontier model for ~48hrs and have it blast out an optimized impl of another model. Jax/CUDA/whatev. Don't like vLLM/llama.cpp? Claude printed me a Jev-compatible server for Clef in 100% cuTile-python last night. now I can just use it locally forever

I'll let you know when file managers draw my wrath and BFM appears

"DankMaterialShell" is a hilarious name for a desktop component but also more things should follow this pattern. There should be BitchinFileManager and SweetEmailClient and whatnot. We should all live a little more, is what I'm saying

I got Niri running on Fedora and fixed my long tail of small issues (mostly audio and stuff) and I have to say it's kind of beast mode. Might not need to boot back to Windows for a long time (except Destiny/Marathon)

Windows Subsystem for Linux v1, based on the idea of implementing Linux syscalls on top of ntoskrnl.exe, was cool as an idea. It also turned out to be awful in practice and barely worked for anything slightly off the beaten path. I have no idea why people eulogize it so fondly

I actually do respect the attempt, not because it's "cool" (it is a cool idea) but because I appreciate studying the negative result. Sometimes you make a bet, and sometimes it is a bad bet and you lose. That's valuable and you don't need to put any mustard on it or anything to see why.

Most of the impressions I get though when people bring it up are just sort of like, that was cool and this (run a vm) is boring. Perhaps, but figuring out _why_ it didn't work is also cool, if you ask me. There's nothing really lost, only some things to learn.

the raw single-core scalar performance of the Oryon v3/Snapdragon X2 (X2E-88-100) is shockingly good, better than even my 9950X3D2 desktop in raw compute perf. if they can get a standard Debian UEFI ISO booting and up the RAM 32GB->64GB (ugh) it would actually be a pretty killer Linux devbox

I have advanced this to GCC 13.5+binutils 2.41+LLVM 23. funny bit, just linking mimalloc into the build I improved performance by 15% because musl "ping pongs" back to the OS by giving it memory back too eagerly. 300k mmap syscalls to compile 1 (one) .c file! musl's allocator is bad at any speed

Last night I had 6-astra-max plan out and begin working on a port of the full source nix/guix bootstrap to raw Buck2 BUILD files and it apparently completed this morning! will be interesting to evaluate how it did here
