Anthropic hired the former head of Google Books to oversee its secret "Project Panama," new court docs show — quietly buying millions of used books in bulk, breaking their spines and scanning them to feed into its Claude chatbot. wapo.st/4rjXAMQ

It's possible, but slower, less accurate, more expensive, and only really useful for rare books where the physical item should be preserved. It's not necessary for every mass market paperback copy languishing in warehouses for years on end.

This a much more measured and accurate post than your previous one. Digitization is many things, and IA has shown how to do it at scale without distraction. In fact, Better World Books, who supplied many of the books to the Panama Project is supplied by books scanned at IA.

physical books are not scarce. there is no reason to 'innovate' non destructive scanning for digital text uploading, that also costs more. eg imagine anthropic instead spent more money and then had a warehouse of surplus books that it wasn't economical to resell. why would that be better

*not especially directed at present parties voice* I just know a lot of woe is going to betide, everyone is misunderestimating the augeries again

visceral indeed! a powerful image! but here's what they don't teach you in harvard business school: the better the splayed out bird guts, the more potent the augury one fears that if woe were to betide those who misunderestimate the meaning, a lot of woe would end up betiding just saying...

You're telling me that the inexhaustible self-transcending dream-devouring ontogeneratamatrix has gorged itself on every scrap of logosmic effluvia that it could catch in its leviathan jaws, even as it strained the vastness of the unplumbed Sea? I'm hearing this just now for the first time

Not arguing about the Anthropic story. Just correcting The Fresh Prince‘s assertion that all books are digitized this way.

on a personal note I did some book digitization in the before times (one page at a time... uphill both ways...) and I would have gladly flung the entirely replacable book-to-be-digitized into one of those uniqlo checkout hoppers to destructively atomize it for the same end goal
