Can St John Transit piggyback on a big agency’s order to reduce the unit costs of replacement? In Ontario, the Metrolinx Transit Procurement Initiative buys new buses in bulk to general requirements developed by several agencies together, so that they can get the bulk savings of big orders.

That’s a great idea. It’s the type of role that DTI or a new provincial agency could start playing as they get deeper into transit.

Maybe it’s not allowed but can St John’s Transit (with their own funding) partner with an out of province procurement? Like I know Ontario wouldn’t fund it but supposing you had the money for the buses could you join a Metrolinx, STM or TTC led procurement provided you accepted their bus specs.

That statement is not entirely accurate. While the Province of Ontario has long provided capital funding for new subway and light rail lines, they stopped providing operating funding almost thirty years ago.

The $178M for Toronto is only a small fraction of the TTC's almost $1.4B budget which the Province used to fund half until the late 1990's. Still, having been born and raised in Moncton, I don't understand why NB wouldn't fund transit.

For sure, I don’t want to imply that things are rosy in Ontario. Canada in general is far behind the rest of the word. Unfortunately, NB is on different planet. We’re pushing to change that! :)
