I have three novels to write, all different styles, and I'm worried they bleed into each other, as would whatever I'm reading - but none of them are SF, so I'm going to read the EDAs from the start, as a palette cleanser as I go along. First up - the 8 Docs, which I remember as being shite.

THE JANUS CONNECTION is pretty good, solid space adventure stuff I suppose. I likes how Baxendale writes Sam and the radiation sickness soldiers are genuinely minging. There’s a couple of weird editorial decisions though -

the second massive space tunnel in three books, for one; having characters called Vatka, Vigo and - actually I forget the other one now, but it sounds very similar to those two - all in the space of a few pages,

but it’s mainly hamstrung by being a relatively unambitious runaround coming straight after EMPRESS - and by a solution at the end which is utterly daft, and pulled out its arse even by Doctor Who standards.
