I think that when artists wish for old DA, it's actually wishing for things to go back to before socials. IDK if people remember, but in DA heyday, artists weren't all sold on the idea of monetizing everything. People joined DA because they wanted a fun & friendly community of other artists first -

It used to be that people on DA would get frustrated with those who would "fav and run" that is, the thing that would increase exposure instead of commenting. Years later, I saw frustration over commenting/liking but not reblogging on Tumblr, sometimes equating it to violence.

I kinda remember that... I guess no matter where or what, there will be some people unhappy with the system and also people who'll game it to their advantage.

It was also a platform that at first was very teen-coded, I had a friend ask me for a website for their kid to post drawings and I really didn't know where to send them

Guess it depends on the groups. I remember even on very early dA a lot of us did try sell art. Mostly for points so that we can look cool or smth. And there were plenty hissy fights on that site. What I do want is the gallery format instead of the endless one image scroll.

Do you remember when they started selling points? I only have very vague memories of it, and I'm trying to recall if it was something they added slightly later (like, 2010-ish)?

I am unsure but everyone went from charging 5 bucks to points and then bragging about the point bank. I remember them instantly being a heaving point even tho they were fairly worthless.

DA really started ruining itself the moment money became more attractive than actually supporting artists. Even before the AI thing. Also remember when everyone was crashing out because Core changed from dark green highlights to bright orange highlights? Ah, times were truly simpler…

I don't think socials themselves were the culprit because early Myspace and Facebook wasn't about hustle culture. It was when big brands and companies started using socials, then came paid ads, the business pages and the SocMed sites saw dollar signs in the data. Capitalism doing its thing...

I went back and posted onto FA (fur affinity) again recently and it feels the same as it always had, which is kinda nice. So at least some places are hanging on. I do miss old DA and the conceptart forums though.

I also selfishly wish for the days when social media was purely for fun, no businesses/need to promo yourself were on it Totally unjustified wish I know

Same time frame for me with DA was art forums. No one was selling stuff, we were just going "COOL ART!" and giving crits if someone needed / asked for help :) Sometimes people shared jobs too for small stuff. Never liked the DA forums, I was on personal ones with friends.

DA forums had artist drama, if I recall lol. But there probably were some threads or channels that were more like art forums, where it was critiques or people just sharing stuff they made. I think, my memory is getting vague...

I was never around for the DA special but I was around for the early tumblr one and I can grasp what you're getting at. I miss the genuine connections--you can tell that some interactions at first are guided by something else entirely. I think what it is, was that art came first and not views.

Then came socials and with it the increased pressure of not just being seen, but also monetizing everything. Whether you were planning on being a career artist or not, everyone was encouraged to sell their skills. So people became dependent on these places for or to supplement their income.

Art these days almost cannot exist online as a hobby alone. Artists no longer seem to want to spend time as a fun community, because they are busy trying to make money off what they do. That's why all the DA clones keep failing, and people keep going back to Twitter or Insta etc.

I don’t think it’s like… we can divorce ourselves from needing to make money. But I think we were kinda tricked into making everything, even our hobbies, about making more money, and it’s not a good solution to the underlying problem.

P.S I'm not saying artists shouldn't make money. But what I'm saying is these days, artists will continue to use platforms they can monetize first. Or there needs to be a attitude shift whereby enough artists want to prioritize something other than money making.

I miss the time when we weren't all desperately clawing after enough money to let us live. Like, part of what made that possible was that we *weren't* half an inch from financial disaster. We could spare the time and attention to make art for its own sake. That feels... much less possible now.

Every time anyone in my life has told me "youre so good at (x) you should start selling it" ive had to tell them to lay it off. Once you turn your hobby into a job you will stop liking it... But I'm really not sure how easy it is to undo that switch in your brain

Eh. I'm still baffled by people, random people, people that doesn't even sell comissions refusing to leaving twitter because the numbers are bigger there It's a mix of vanity and sunken cost fallacy I think

For me, I'm still here primarily for community... 🥺 But at the same time, I have that crushing weight over me that it would legitimately save me and my family if I could make a living... Problem is, I'm not an advertiser at heart and it pains me to try and make money from what I do 😔 I won't-
