the design is fine but it's horribly slow and non-reactive – htmx was not a good choice imo

Ah yeah, that does make a lot of sense. I do feel though that an SPA for now would be better without needing more hardware -- the UI loads quicker & optimistically reacts while the AppView waits for the actual request
