If you want to explore, the code is here: gist.github.com/tenderlove/0... The trick is that the multi-assign returns an array, and it can't be elided because initialize returns it (even though `new` ignores it)

Is the return value of initialize ever used? Could it just always be forced to be elided?

It could be. You could just call it as a method and use the return value

Still feels like 99.999% of all uses is from .new, so seems ok to hard return nil in the VM, eliding the return. There's already precedent for it with setter methods that end in `=` not honoring the method's return value.
