Why? The gov refuses to pay for it, industries lobbying against it, and the country is big, with major cities far apart, making flying attractive. That said, too much lobbying in the US government and reliable public transit is a public good.

remember when the GOP claimed the high speed rail out west was going to go from Disneyland in CA to the Bunny Ranch brothel in outside Carson City, Nevada. Megyn Kelly claimed it was real on Fox News and got a Congressman to claim it was real.
