Arguably Nixon was also intelligent. He was known as Tricky Dick for a reason, and it's not because he was stupid or uneducated. He had enough mental sophistication and education that he was difficult to pin down. Even David Frost, a seasoned interviewer, found him extremely challenging.

Exactly, and Nixon didn't do as much damage as trump has already done to this nation and its system of government, and common decency. He just stole an election, but republicans still had a morall backbone and were planning to impeach him if he didn't resign.

Because Nixon, like white rich men, never have to pay the consequences. That is why we are here.

I wish I could agree. Nixon was horrific. Trump has destroyed every norm and trashed the constitution. Nixon didn't have immunity from prosecution. Nixon was caught in the cross-hairs of checks and balances that are non-existent today.

Nixon was an Amateur

That’s because Nixon was never held accountable. He was pardoned. The law doesn’t apply equally when those in power are allowed to walk free when an average person would be in prison.

Nixon never trafficked, molested and raped children and adults. Nixon never was convicted of 34 felonies and never filed multiple bankruptcies or stole from his own charity. Nixon didn’t appoint unqualified sycophants to cabinet positions. But I get your point.

We need to go all the way back to Reconstruction and understand that there need to be real and lasting consequences for traitorous and corrupt behavior. We didn't hold Confederates accountable, nor Nixon, but EVERYONE in MAGA needs to feel the pain when this is over, no matter how long it takes.

What's saddest is that the authoritarian right is the part of the polity that took the lessons of Watergate to heart. Trump is the result of a 40 year project to kill American democracy. If we survive this (and I believe we will), the center must start rebuilding by prosecuting these criminals.

This is worth reading and contemplating. A President without shame propped up by equally shameless Cabinet members, Congressmembers, billionaires, and the media does still rely on public approval. The average person still feels shame, so it is still a point of some leverage, with proper messaging.
