I didn't know much about elf on the shelf but it genuinely sounds like so much fun, parents move the elf around each night leading to Christmas, making him do pranks that the kids discover, they're not allowed to touch the elf or "it'll lose its magic," i wish I had gotten to enjoy it 😅
I don't think it's good to normalize surveillance for your kids. Santa is magical and knows if you've been good or bad is fun. Santa has an agent in your house watching you who reports back on your every action is bad for individual children and also society as a whole.
So you're ok with one super mega surveillance entity (Santa) but not a smaller surveillance entity that brings more joy and possibly can act as quality control and ensure Santa stays on the up and up?
