This idea of names being for both genders is so strange to me, because in Polish a name is either a male one or a female one, that's it, no ambiguity… there's maybe one exception I can think of (Maria is sometimes use as a middle name for men). I'm guessing a lot of languages are like this.

There is a group of mostly Slavic-origin female names that are derived from male names, e.g. Antoni - Antonina, Bronisław - Bronisława, but it's still a different name that's unambiguously one or the other

I feel you! My "first name" is "JC John" but growing up I only used "JC". Here in the Philippines, "JC" is generally a female name. The numerous raised eyebrows I've encountered every single time I meet someone new. 😅 It only changed sometime mid to late 00s when it became dominantly a male name.

Out of nowhere, people associated "JC" with "Jesus Christ" and forgot the old associations like "Jean Christine" or "Joana Cristina". Names are fascinating. Here in the Philippines, names like Jean and Joan are female names, but in Europe it's both male names from what I've read before. 😆
