It’s incredible how many of the people I looked up to in the past in the world of web development have since revealed themselves as being somewhere in or at least adjacent to the manosphere-techbro-AI stan-maga-white supremacy oeuvre

I was thinking about this earlier - survival of the fittest has selected for those who see the business as a red in tooth and claw battle, whilst the more idealistic and liberal have rejected such behaviour. In turn it means we've ceded control those with the weakest moral compasses.

And to some extent the answer has to be to stop trying to win the moral argument, and instead fight the battle. Stop elevating people purely for their ability to grab the limelight, and focus on what they can deliver. (Is than an artist vs. art argument??)

Regardless, the ones who get to set the agenda are the ones who grab the customers, build profitable businesses, and demand attention. So 'we' have to be there rather than dismissing such tasteless excess.

(And as an aside, It's interesting that the big stars in the liberal arts world are completely uninterested in building things in the tech sphere. Why isn't Taylor Swift building a Spotify rival, or Stephen King investing in a bookstore, or Cara Delevigne funding an alternative to Instagram?)
