I do not understand why people are sharing this thread. This excerpt clearly says that people who used AI to help with menial fractions for 10 minutes then did a worse job when LLM help was removed than people who were never given that help. That is in line with the study’s statement.

The person who wrote that thread teaches a class that cites LLMs as positive to human progress as a given, just mired in bad pitches. IDK what to say other than “Have you observed the world” because I have watched people use them for “menial” tasks, and they do in fact start sucking at many things.

This is a well established pattern in human cognition. We hate difficult or boring things. And: some difficult or boring things are good for you to do.

Lots of studies show that human brains will flail and quit tasks when a tool is revoked. Calculators absolutely make us less willing to do math. The difference between an LLM and a calculator is that the calculator won’t offer to parent your children or do your job.

Whiiiiiiiiich the author points out a parallel point to, as in follow-up studies: this generalizes to reading. The shit you offload to other things? You get worse at/less willing to do those. This is not new psychology. It is reproducible. Come on.
