People used to get online famous by saying like, “Uhh yeah, I love making my HOT BEAN JUICE every single morning!!!” But now you have to say like, the Monopoly Man fucked my ass

Replying to @rafiews.com

After the first round elections, Congressman André Janones created a WhatsApp channel titled “Lula’s Army.” It ballooned to 10 million people following his commands on how to behave online to counteract Meta’s far-right-favouring algorithms. The right knows how to use socials. We must learn, too.

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

I’m glad that Lula won for a lot of reasons but selfishly it kinda confirms that “swagless son of a fascist freak” will probably be a losing ticket when Trump dies and if the boys make a go for it.

I think that if AI, GLP-1s, and anti-trans Democrats were all truly so necessary, people would spend less money advertising them and not individually threaten people who refused to co-sign them.

I'm sure it's good that over the past several days I have seen multiple vibecoding people say their individual versions of "yeah this is like playing a slot machine for me and I find it hard to stop and I love that actually"

Something about the shape of the universe in people once railing against in-game currency being bought with real money, now generating YT content using robots that do 10,000 thefts to produce one kind of usable thing, but only if you feed them enough “tokens”

The first genuinely honest ad for generative AI I've ever seen, from Microsoft / CoPilot A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead: www.ispot.tv/ad/SoDi/micr...

James Talarico gave up his principles to make Elon Musk happy. Not for conservative voters—polls are generally showing trans issues are not high priority to anyone this cycle. Dem reversals on trans rights are *only* to assuage Musk & his one-man nationwide ad campaign. This is how Elon Musk reacts

I have refused to use the term “Somali gangs” despite tremendous pressure. Why? It’s a political narrative, not an accurate descriptor of gun violence, even if it was committed by a Somali youth. Who is driving this narrative? Republicans, the Strib, and police. Brilliant reporting below.

DEEP DIVE is up! How the Star Tribune turned Republican “Somali gangs” rhetoric into an election-year crime narrative—and helped give demands for expanded local, state, and federal enforcement the authority of news.

“We only use AI for X” is becomming more common, but “search” there belies “we are bad at organizational knowledge,” “code” is “we don’t care about performant/maintainable code,” etc. It’s just not useful except when you 1) have undertrained staff and don’t want them to learn, or 2) do not care

Aura/Moom@moomanibe.bsky.social

I'll be honest, there is nothing more demoralizing to me than devs saying "I know AI is built on theft, and anti-labour, and harms the environment, but I'm going to use it anyway bc I don't believe individual choices matter". This is how a movement fails. www.molleindustria.org/blog/future-...

The reason this stuff is acceptable in other applications is that people *already don’t give a shit about MS Word*. We expect enterprise-grade software to suck. People get mad when games are slow and shitty and boring. But the slide started with licensed engines, DLSS, “fuck it” hardware.

I just don’t think people using AI will make truly powerful games, period. Caring about craft always improves the thing. My main fear is that there are always a million interesting games in the weeds, never breaking through, because Steam/etc. is bad at promotion. And AI has made that worse.

Modern Times is closing at the end of the year. This is extremely fair, as those running it have had a very hard time of things, but it is a huge bummer. We need to live in our city, we need to care for people, and we have to give money to people here, not to tech bullshit. www.moderntimesmpls.com

The amount of money that leaves our neighborhoods via DoorDash, Lyft, corporate landlords, etc. is fucking heartbreaking. When you buy shit from Amazon you are supporting tech feudalism. There are cool, experimental, heartfelt things happening here. If we don’t support them, they can’t exist.

A loved one’s work just announced their insurance plan would not be covering GLP-1s for purely weight loss reasons, as this would raise premiums for everyone by 5%. All other issues aside: remember the halcyon days of “Why should I have to pay for someone’s sex change?”

I do not understand why people are sharing this thread. This excerpt clearly says that people who used AI to help with menial fractions for 10 minutes then did a worse job when LLM help was removed than people who were never given that help. That is in line with the study’s statement.

the best part of the internet is about ten years ago we got really up in arms about truth in media and so on and so forth and we have nicely corralled that impulse into "constantly sharing screenshots of random social media accounts that adopt the tone of news sources with no context or verification

Lots of studies show that human brains will flail and quit tasks when a tool is revoked. Calculators absolutely make us less willing to do math. The difference between an LLM and a calculator is that the calculator won’t offer to parent your children or do your job.

Whiiiiiiiiich the author points out a parallel point to, as in follow-up studies: this generalizes to reading. The shit you offload to other things? You get worse at/less willing to do those. This is not new psychology. It is reproducible. Come on.

The person who wrote that thread teaches a class that cites LLMs as positive to human progress as a given, just mired in bad pitches. IDK what to say other than “Have you observed the world” because I have watched people use them for “menial” tasks, and they do in fact start sucking at many things.

I'm convinced Newsom isn't running for President at all. Sure, he might have a committee and use it as a slush fund, but he's running to be appointed to corporate boards and fake think tanks and stuff. Just too many examples of him going out of his way to show he's not aligned with the Dem base.

I would be EXTREMELY annoyed to discover my PR is "AI"-generated, and as someone bombarded with dozens of "AI"-generated emails daily, I assure you the stink of "AI" is immediately noticable and immediately dismissible. Publishers are not doing their new books any favors in using it.

🧵 it's exhausting that once or twice a year, mainstream media outlets will publish "study shows LGBTQ+ identification in 'free fall'!" articles without 1) mentioning other recent studies showing otherwise, 2) providing proper context about what it possibly means... bsky.app/profile/them...

Them@them.us

A Washington Post headline about a “free fall” in LGBTQ+ identification has the conservative internet rejoicing.

In an effort to make my AirPod pros not turn off and on and randomly disconnect, I have reset them several times. This seems to have fixed that issue, showing it’s a soft/firmware issue, however now there are two of the same device in Find My somehow, and this has borked that app. Software is shit.

“AI is changing computing” every day I—who fucking *hates* smart devices and integrated horseshit as a first principle—wake up and contend with nothing goddamn working anymore. Every OS upgrade on my iPhone makes my life contain more misery. If you’re stealing code from these people, please stop.
