Still enjoying Stalker2, its such a generous game, like in line with Elden ring or Skyrim in just the sheer amount of world you can explore - yet is not necessary to do so. I mean the Alife isn't as good as the OG stalker, but the environments are great.

I keep thinking I should go back and try a new FPS - haven't done for years and plenty of interesting stuff is now done in the indie space rather than AAA. But will it be Stalker 2? Will it be (this space intentionally left blank)?

I had a recent unexpected FPS love affair with Hedon (only the first chapter, The Crystal Heart, which comes with Bloodrite). It's absolutely a shooter but bizarrely it felt much closer to Thief for me,

something about its huge, intricate, lived-in environments (I think the dev was/is an architect) coupled with a story told with surprising flair that really crept up on me. The action is really crunchy and the soundtrack is excellent with some surprise tunes from Alexander Brandon...

I mean its practically identical to the original, but with just fancy new gfx and QoL. Its not doing anything new really, but then surprisingly few FPS ever really managed to copy it.. I also really enjoyed Witchfire recently (more shooty, roguelikey, but still some mystery and exploration)

In terms of proper indie FPS, I really enjoyed Lunacid & Northern Journey. Great weird FPSs with that early fromsoft mystery vibes. More RPG and exploration than shooty.. ( strangely I didnt like dread delusion)

I adored Northern Journey! It's janky and frustrating at times, but the sense of place and feeling of going on a journey is something else. It's charming and weird and unsettling, and the music is so evocative. I bought Lunacid near launch but still haven't played it so thanks for the nudge!
