I hope that Representative Morgan’s constituents will urge him to put the safety of all road users above the speed and convenience of cars, as city policy states we must do. Someone who is so heavily involved in decisions regarding our transportation system should know better.

Overhearing parents talk about not feeling comfortable letting their kids walk to school because of the roads. Meanwhile, "real residents" fighting tooth and nail against making roads next to schools safer because they might have to spend 10 more minutes in the car. #a2council

During the walk through we watched a group of kids crossing division at the flashers. A few cars passed until one stopped, but as they crossed another nearly hit them because of the double threat situation this corridor creates for pedestrians with its two lanes in one direction and high speeds.

At the earlier walk through a colleague watched a couple cars jump the curb making the right turn from Carey onto Broadway, the location where Morgan cites lack of deadly crashes as a reason to keep an unsafe turn. How much blood must we spill to justify safety? It’s a fundamental misunderstanding.

The idea that we need to wait until someone dies or is maimed before building safe infrastructure is asinine. And even when people are killed or sustain life-altering injuries on our roadways, that’s still not treated as sufficient justification to change the design, so it’s also insincere.
