This is really crucial in understanding today's right wing: it is an arena in which you can get attention, and become famous, without any skill or insight or knowledge. All you have to do is say outrageous shit. So it's become a collection bin for all these failed, flailing narcissists.

Learned from the Posting Through It podcast just how many MAGA-era influencers turned to politics after failing at more glamorous pursuits — theater, comedy, fashion, TV, movies, music. Knowles, if I’m not mistaken, had dreams of Broadway.

I don't usually pick on small errors in spelling and grammar, but damn, I cannot make sense of most of the sentences in that description. "We call it rat city, I was not informed that this was taking place another school." How did "another school" make it into this sentence? What does it mean?

None of them gives the slightest shit about policy or public life. This is just the only way they could find to get people to look at them.

Yep and this is why they view governing not as governing, really, but as producing "content." They're performers performing a role, except it's not really acting bc it's who they are and bc unfortunately they really do have the job of "head of ICE" or whatever.

Like I don't have the vocabulary to express just how much this is all through the looking glass, kayfabe, breaking the 4th wall (or even some 5th wall we haven't defined yet), inception, just...weirdness of how they approach this and the relationship with the public as "victim/audience."

I watched one yesterday for the first time. Know your enemy and all that. Ten minutes was enough. Angry performative ragebait they either can't believe in, or hadn't really listened to themselves saying out loud. It was profoundly weird, sad, and seemed like a big ol' cry for help.

Omg, this fits in a lot of the not famous people too. One of the loudest MAGA people I actually know was a former college classmate. Ex high school football player who after school tried and failed to establish an acting career. Now he podcasts

The shock-jockification of politics isn’t a great thing. Rush gets held up as a person who pushed forward in talk radio, but I think Howard Stern and similar FM types helped create a space for him to succeed by filling your standard FM radio signal with outrageous stuff. And it kept rolling.
