In the long span of American political history, the southern strategy is going to be seen as the poisoned chalice that the Republicans happily drank from that ultimately spelled their doom.

Me: why's the new 2-factor system make me enter my code two times? My IT guy: we really rushed this out and the redirects are a mess. My IT guy (when presenting to executives): we have made users authenticate twice for increased security

I scrolled through all the replies and quote-skeets and didn't see one of my favorites. Although, maybe because video game and not film/TV

I’ve seen how the poor gun storage thing happens. Someone has a few guns, they lock them up safely. But they have the collector bug. Soon they don’t fit in the safe. They don’t prioritize keeping up. The overflow guns find their way to increasingly reckless locations.

In MAGA US, Congress would rather put our children into lockdown, than make people lock down their guns. The Secret Service found that about 75%of school shooters got their gun from the home of a parent or close relative. Will our next Senate Pass Ethan's Law on Secure firearm storage? Make them.

In college I did a short stint with clean-room cleaning in the biotech facilities in northern San Diego. A lot of the team leads had other jobs in construction and did a loooot of meth to keep going non-stop. In one place you scrubbed the lab, but on another layer, scrubbed the inner lab, then a /

forgotten to unlock it first. Police arrived in under 2 minutes. And his tweaking-ass was trying to explain to them that we were all supposed to be there. Everything worked out fine, but it was a very uncomfortable moment.

My college roommate had a retort ready to go every time someone asked, “how do you know you won’t like smoking weed if you’ve never tried it?” Like clockwork he answered, “Well, I’ve never sucked a d!ck.”

Yes, because it is really important to smoke, try heroin, download CSAM (!!!), or burn plastic, etc etc to be able to discuss the dangers and harms of those activities.

Rage Against the Machine should be invited for a guest testimony performed in song

The first impeachment trial was a pretty big spectacle considering how little the facts lent themselves to drama. The second was weak sauce. The third should be fucking Apollo Creed v. Ivan Drago circus-level shit.

Man I loath the fundamental concept of “Parental Rights”. Kids have rights, and parents are morally only granted powers in order to secure them.

When I was a newspaper reporter, it was part of my job in Huntsville to go and witness the executions conducted at one of the prisons in town. I don't remember the exact number I was present for but it was close to at least a dozen, each of them via lethal injection. /1

Raqefet Cave in Israel was a sacred burial site for the hunter-gatherer culture known as the 'Natufians' around 13,000 years ago. More recently, we've also discovered here the earliest evidence of BEER BREWING from grains. Even more remarkable because these people HADN'T INVENTED AGRICULTURE YET.

smithsonianmag.comTraces of 13,000-Year-Old Beer Found in IsraelAccording to the authors of a new study, the discovery marks the earliest-known evidence of beer production among ancient peoples

The first time I read anything by a singularity believer on the internet (~1997), they firmly believed that ethics was rational and that a super-intelligence would naturally be hyper-moral. This turn to a doomsday cult is very weird.

My 10 year old yesterday after watching some science and video game videos on YouTube, “there were a bunch of commercials. Some of them were saying Josh Shapiro is a good guy. And some saying he’s a bad guy. What’s that all about?” So we had to talk about the upcoming elections and campaigns.

Here's a gift link to my 9/11 essay in the NYT. Civil libertarians long warned that before giving government new powers, we should consider how an administration with authoritarian ambition might abuse them. We were told that America was too exceptional to elect such a person. Well here we are.

nytimes.comOpinion | Civil Libertarians Knew This Would Happen. We Should Have Listened. (Gift Article)The civil libertarians’ warnings have come true.

Reason #1237 why representation in media is important. My 8 & 10 year old are excited about the new Avatar (as in AtLA). They've seen someone online speculating that Pavi will be a weak Avatar because she's an amputee. And they immediately came to me to say how absurd that statement is because Toph

invented metal bending at age 12, and that being blind was no limiting factor to her powers. They know that disabilities are not a barrier being able to contribute and being a fully participating member of society. Thanks AtLA

Hey, this is actually my speculative theory! One proposal of consciousness is a system that ruminates on memories of the past and fantasizes projections of the future. I posit that financial markets do both and the primary substrate of its mind is excel spreadsheets in place of neurons.

I’ve definitely ridden bikes through the drive-thru. But my peak this achievement was definitely Jacki-in-the-Box at 2am with a roommate and two girls we met at a party squatting in a square formation and miming driving a stick shift for drunk tacos.

I spoke to Mitch McConnell for 20 minutes this morning and he told me that we need to ban cars, federally subsidize public transit and ebikes, and begin immediately depaving all road widening projects that happened in the last 50 years.

Me re-reading my own posts and replies when they pop back up in notifications, "aw yeah, this is the great content".

Holy mackerel this is insane. LLMs have a strong bias toward *their own* 'writing' to real writing in sorting tasks. iow human submissions automatically drop to the bottom in LLM sorting tasks. Resumes examined here with jaw-dropping results arxiv.org/pdf/2509.00462

Looking for a fun way to celebrate Pride month virtually? Consider learning ASL with from Queer ASL : You can learn to share your English pronouns in ASL! Work your way up to signing "I'm going to a queer dance party!" Classes start this coming week, but there's still available spots!

Sparrow / Liz@untonuggan.myatproto.social

I'm about halfway through my ASL 101 class with @queerasl.bsky.social and holy heck, I think this is the MOST accessible learning environment I have *ever* been in (and I'm not even taking the class specifically geared towards disabled folks??) PSA registration for next session is now open

Thinking about when my 5th grade teacher gamified the classroom. - trimesterly had a long-running creative writing assignment based on what we had learned in history - divided the classroom into small teams and had the groups make decisions to explore a map and unlock events

Devolving into low-trust society is very bad, actually

Reo Eveleth@reveleth.com

There is something brutally psychically injurious to being constantly told "just do good work and you'll be successful" while watching people who do the most dogshit work possible do all the succeeding.
