This is a great example of what's called "pluralistic ignorance" -- the phenomenon whereby most people share a particular view, but they *don't think other people share it*. In this case: most people are concerned about climate change but think others aren't.

As long as we pretend like personal opinion is the same as scientific fact and then allow that to be taught side by side as if these are equally true positions- this will continue to be an issue.

Here's a great paper on it. The key thing to notice is the role it almost always plays: to *slow the updating of norms & moral precepts in a more progressive direction.* People are prepared to be more tolerant & decent, but they don't think other people are, so they keep quiet.

frontiersin.orgFrontiers | A century of pluralistic ignorance: what we have learned about its origins, forms, and consequencesThe concept of pluralistic ignorance was introduced a century ago by social psychologist, Floyd Allport. Since then, it has been broadly applied in the socia...

There are ways in which people are naturally, psychologically prone to this, but it's also worth emphasizing that it *serves the status quo*, so status quo powers have every reasons to reinforce it. They don't want you to know that other people share your opinions, so they hide & suppress it.

That helps explain why big media, always the handmaiden of power, works so hard to frame climate concern as some fey, boutique, out-of-touch elite concern. They don't want you to know that other people are concerned too. If you knew that, you might organize & push for change! And so we get this:

Adding: this is one reason conservatives work so hard to stigmatize "virtue signaling." Virtue signaling is actually incredibly important! It lets other people know that they are not alone in their values. It works against pluralistic ignorance. That's why they want you to feel abashed & stay quiet.

Sure, but I also see so many people claiming that this is super concerning, complaining that nothing gets done to stop it getting worse, and in the next sentence order a large steak before describing their latest holidays involving long-distance flights. Are they TRULY concerned?

I do wonder how much can be explained by pragmatic inference. I think climate change in general is a very easy issue to be pessimistic about & when you've had 20 years of warnings about tipping points but haven't seen any major solutions at the federal level, it's easy to be disinclined to optimism

Yeah honestly I’m always a bit hesitant to bring up climate change talk with a group of strangers because there’s usually one blowhard who will go on a rant about it being a hoax and I don’t have the energy to argue with those types of people. It’s so draining, frustrating and futile.

I mean define "serious" because when I think serious I think stringing up oil execs and shuttering oil fields by force not talking about it for another fifty years while the literal landscape changes before our very eyes. If people were taking this seriously we wouldn't allow it to continue.

The fact that most Americans don't trust other Americans to be even half-way decent people who give a damn about anything other than themselves is not surprising. I, personally, feel that way. I feel like I live among zombies who are ok as long as their tv works.

Brexit is another example of pluralistic ignorance. Most Brits (60%+) realise it's an utter catastrophe but aren't yet sure - nor are UK govts - that there's enough political will to undo it

There's probably a large percentage of the electorate concerned about climate change and pollution. Unfortunately, there's probably a large percentage of elected politicians being paid to ignore it.

Well good luck in July, to all the non believers! Heat wave due to climate change about to scorch the US! Here in the UK we have just gone through a week of sweltering heat 38c & another heat wave on its way averaging 36c across the UK.

So interesting. The corporate MSM owned by fossil fuel oligarchs has done such an effective job of raising doubt and sowing false ambiguity about these findings that those of us able to put 2 & 2 together on our own doubt that others have made the same conclusion. “Maslow s basement” in action.

I wish people would not take polls at face value. The full report has 19 pages and doesn't show you any breakdown of how many interviews per country they did and in what way. "[...] no representation or warranty is made as to any of the data’s accuracy or reliability." It's basically trust me bro.

That’s the thing, Americans will wait till whatever it is almost blows then they react and slowly at that. Trumps case is a prime example. The republicans have wanted a civil war of a long time, me personally I would have given it to them and all this mess would be over.

"Pluralistic ignorance" is a nice phrase, but i think there's a major factor to the climate change debate that isn't that. It's propaganda. Some of the richest businesses and people in the world have piles of money invested in fossil fuels and they have done everything they can over the last 1/2

50 years to confuse the public. In the 1970s Exxon had some of the world's top climate scientists. They said back then that Exxon's business model would destroy the planet's climate in the long run. And Exxon responded by lying to the public for decades. 2/2

We've been drowned by conservative and pro-corporate denials of climate change risks for decades. The media have been complicit by both-sidesing this. Only recently we learned fossil fuel corps lied and plastic can't really be recycled. The disinformation has been dizzying.
