Finally. Would make it much easier instead of submitting a photo of my ID for every new club I want to visit. (which I don't do much though...)

Yah, I'm not doxing myself. At least when a VRChat group askes for an ID they tell you to blur out certain details for your own safety but this is just giving private info to a shady US compony who will most definitely sell my info like every other US company ever.

Persona is literally the company used to age verify roblox that let thousands of kids use fake IDs and photos. Also the company who sold data from minors who played roblox. This is not to protect children, just like the EAC update this is only to protect VRChat's liability.

Nope. I've had a Visa card since I was 16 (and used it to bypass some age checks back in the day, lul), and it's even easier now that you can get prepaid "gift" cards at many places

Took em long enough, but progress is progress. Looking forward to 18+ instances so I dont have to deal with constanant screaming kids. Also very much looking forward to content gating actually working.

This is great. Whatever cost is involved - I am willing to pay the costs for the verification as VRC itself is free. Thank you for offering this - and also using a service which is doing a proper check and not just an "I'm over 18" checkmark.

IT eng, no chance of being mistaken for a minor, though not quite AARP eligible yet despite all their attempts to sign me up... I will not be showing my ID to a rando third party.

I have to ask: since the form mentions something like, 'How many age-verified instances do you plan to open by January 2025?' does that imply we should expect initial rollouts to occur between now and then?

Oh oh! You're talking about me! What if I don't feel comfortable handing off my ID and then being part of a data breach later? You do know companies are getting hacked left and right, right? You know how their privacy policy says they may delete the data immediately or keep it for 3 years, right?

Oh and the Persona privacy policy gives data deletion rights based on jurisdiction. GDPR rights apply to the EU, UK, and Switzerland. Americans aren't guaranteed these rights unless covered by laws like CCPA. Outside those, deletion depends on Persona's discretion.

You do know that their policy contains a class action waiver so you can't sue in a class action lawsuit if anything goes wrong? Remember crowdstrike? How a little fuckup screwed over the entire world for like a week? Even though they had all these certs? How many big corps trusted them?

You know how identity theft can completely ruin your life, right? And while it is opt-out on VRC's side, you can already bet on many clubs and social groups requiring this, making doing this a necessity to hang out with the groups and places you love. Oh but I'm just complaining, don't mind me.

I am a 71 year old VRchat user, and I object to 'Age Verification'; it is the slippery road into authoritarianism, so precedent in virtually all social media sites. While it is annoying to have a ten year old come blasting through gibbering away, we already have tools for that: You can block them.

you verify today because otherwise you can't hang with friends. #vrchat sells in 4 years time to facebook. Facebook queries the full list of vrc username -> real-life ID names and photos. Your VRC data, tied to you IRL, goes out to all ad networks, readily doxxable by anyone with a CC.

at least watch the video. vrchat isn't even going to see any of the ID stuff, they only get the birthdate from the third party service.

Did one better: read the API docs for persona. It seems they get back an ID, which links specifically to an authorization, from which they can choose to retrieve the birthdate only. This is a thing they can choose; same ID can also link. The question is whether they keep the ID internally.

Very much looking forward to no longer having to go to the Pug or H party just in ensure I’m not in worlds with kids. I really would love to go to some of the more popular worlds without having to deal with issues that come along with that.

This is great!! Being able to limit kids from joining some instances/groups is the best thing we can have in this situation. I'm really curious to see how things will go from here

It just removed the liability from VR chat, they can say that they've done everything they can to make sure that there are no minors, but there will still be a bunch of minors who just use their mommy's ID and face so they can go play in 18+ worlds.

It's a good thing for VRChat. But i would have liked other ways to verify age too. Like paying VRC+ with debit cards that can also verify the age via IBAN. No to happy that the only option is a US company, which means if the US wants they do have access to the data, even in a seperate EU Datacentre.

Huge big brain move and a right step. I would also love my VRC+ as part of the verification process since I already pay for it. Or a one time fee collected to verify my age. I would be more than happy to pay once.

Can we have a safety setting based on the age verification? I don't want to see underage users at all and I don't want them to see me.
