Genuinely feel kind of bad for resonite with the vrchat comparisons. People say how setting up an avatar in vrchat is "easy", but the process they describe isn't comparable, and I think a lot of people forget how involved it can be in unity, or have just never had to.

There’s easy and there’s also “I know this highly technical process because it’s been drummed in to me for years”, which I’d argue better describes the VRChat avatar workflow. Nothing that Resonite offers is technically any harder (arguably it’s easier in many ways) but they have no knowledge of it.

It's infinitely easier just because you can ask a friend (Or a stranger for that matter) for help and the response will be "Yea just follow me away from the group/to my homeworld real quick" And not "how much are you willing to pay?"

As a veteran of both platforms, I have always found the VRC SDK to be much easier to use since I can use VRCFury and whatnot, ans every time I've tried to set up the same avatar in Resonite, it felt more clumsy or complex, and alwyas have to have someone come help. x-x

Yea Fury usually helps things along, but having also been using it for a long time it's caused a lot of frustration too. (Seriosuly why are some parameters it generates locked to be autonamed, and thus can't be used to activate other animations in the animator)

But I think the comparison is also somewhat unfair. Because Resonite just hasn't had some of those tools developed by the community yet. But a good ammount of tools still have through modding the game. Like bone transfers for outfits especially is a time saver I use. Resolute has a good list of mods

The main thing Resonite really needs is just for more Avatars to support it with Resonite packages, so you don't have to worry about any of that. There's systems made or possible to be made to make avatar work and the resulting avatar, far better than VRC because of its more open engine nature.

tbh anybody who says vrc is easy is wrong lol the vrcsdk is fine for what it is, but i really can't call it easy having to find your way around unity just to upload a premade avi, at least resonite doesn't make you register for an entirely separate proprietary engine just to have an upload button

even just the process of registering for a unity personal license, downloading a multi GB engine and figuring out how to import the unitypackage and upload the avatar, even if the avatar is fully premade thats a lot of friction and a large chunk of unity's features are irrelevant for an avatar maker

as a creator the vrchat sdk is fine, it has pain points and i don't like unity but thats just me but as a user, its really not smooth, and it being this way has lead to a lot of people sharing their PWs so someone else can upload for them (which is signifying of a problem, and is kind of yikes imo)

i can't speak much of what resonite's editor UI is like, but i can't imagine its actually much harder than unity i'd assume its just people being scared of it more than anything, another case of people assume its hard and the assumption itself is what makes it hard, like a self fulfilling prophecy

People don't compare 1:1, people compare what THEY have to do to get their avatar into the games. And since their avatar is already set up for VRChat, it's more work to get it into Resonite. Although that's not really the case anymore if you use the new Resonite Unity SDK. Then it's about similar.

Actually setting up a vrchat avatar from scrach, importing an fbx, configuring the textures render and shaders, messing around with bone names and attaching an avatar descriptor is in my opinion just as involved as setting up an avatar from scratch in resonite, if not the same minus the bone stuff

And for the easy route. For vrchat all you have to do is drag in a unitypackage, follow avatar creator instructions if needed, and then upload. In resonite, you just need to do the exact same thing with a resonitepackage. Drag it onto the game window, equip the avatar. Done.

The problem is, avatar creators have to actually set that package up in the first place, the *same* as for the unitypackage Problem is, most don't So you just end up with vrchat being ""easy"" because it's a .unitypackage and resonite being hard because you actually have to do the setup yourself

I have literally seen complaints going "If Resonite wants to survive it as to make importing avatars easier" And it's like "How much more easy do you want! we already have a drag and drop option without any external programs or menus!"

I'm not trying to attack avatar creators with this. I just feel bad for the platform because a lot of the tools and stuff that make it easy just aren't being used enough The tools are there, people just need to use them
