That's great news. I live in Alberta, Canada, where our premier is a paid-for total tool of big corporations & is approving data centres with zero environmental assessment and zero consideration of their impact on long-term employment prospects.

Maine could have been first - but Democratic Governor Janet Mills vetoed that - in apparent collusion with data center developer Jay data center developer sought to give Janet Mills ‘cover’ for key veto, emails show themainemonitor.org/jay-data-cen...

themainemonitor.orgJay data center developer sought to give Mills ‘cover’ for key vetoEmails obtained show a developer solicited letters of support to give Gov. Janet Mills “cover” for her veto of a statewide data center ban.

Sigh. Billionaires ruin everything. What if we made neighborhood-scale compute data centers powered by solar. Use the waste heat to replace aging gas/oil boilers to warm nearby homes, schools, and offices. Treat compute like a public utility and infrastructure innovation instead of a profit center.

2/2 - “The cost per job can be extreme. In one case, a data center in New York promised 125 jobs in exchange for $1.4 billion, or $11 million per job, Good Jobs First found. The average cost of data center "megadeals" is $1.95 million per job, according to a Good Jobs First study.”

This is what standing for something vs standing for NOTHING looks like ... !!!!! Have we EVER seen a politician work as diligently and as fast at getting REAL shit people care about done!!!! take notes fellow Mayors ... you owe us better!!!!!

You just know he or his staff was a driving force behind this. Hochol is an establishment Dem, but she has to be seen supporting Mamdani lest she face the wrath of his supporters come election time. I love that for her and wish it on all pro-corporate establishment Dems.

Move data centers to space. Instead of building one massive, monolithic megastructure in space,"string of pearls" in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). Each individual satellite acts like a tiny, self-contained server rack equipped with its own solar panels, a small cluster of AI chips, laser communicators.

Cue the GOP saying they are "killing jobs." Constituents on both sides are opposed datacenters for AI, but it will still be used as an opportunity to (try to) make them look bad.

stupid political non-sense. Data centers do NOT raise electricity bills and close loop water system do not consume addition water to cool themselves. What data centers provide is added tax revenue for communities not stupid enough to make such bans

The order specifically pauses state environmental reviews for facilities over 50 megawatts, instructing the Department of Public Service to assess the environmental and energy impact of data centers during this time, and to develop a new generic environmental impact statement.

wired.comNew York Governor Signs First Statewide Data Center Moratorium“We have no choice but to address the challenges created by these massive facilities,” New York governor Kathy Hochul said. The executive order will pause construction for one year.

The problem is that this only attacks one end of the problem. We really need to get at the root of it, which is the demand. We need a total ban on generative AI, which brings far more problems than just resource-hungry, polluting data centers.

What good will a pause do? There’s o need for an environmental impact study because the fired work’s been done in other stars. data centers disk up all the water while polluting the air What’s needed is a mandated shift in data center design and power train.

This is a smart move. Even with only a one-year pause, over that time it will become increasingly clear that most of these datacenter proposals will never be built. We're moving rapidly to local LLM hosting, which does 99.9% of what we want AI to do.

But what if I want "AI" to do nothing, and for all theft-based LLMs including locally hosted ones to be regulated out of existence, as they should be? :)

yeah for a year, good start. Many places are banning them, and just remember, they are a constant target to thieves since most of the stuff there is worth millions. They been having van loads aparently
