This conversation goes on all the time. In order to get rid of the electoral college you have to get ¾ or the dates (38) to agree. Meaning the states that benefit, Wyoming, ‘Montana etc would have to vote against their own best interests. The ERA has been in the works for decades.

One Human Being = One Vote Look to India, where they have used ink to keep elections fair. The Indian Election Commission has used this practice for more than seven decades to prevent fraud and duplicate votes. Sometimes the simplest idea works the best.

This is an absolutely stupid take. I hate the EC, but to "get rid of" it would require a Constitutional amendment & thus a Constitutional Convention. If one were held today, the GOP could and would rewrite our most founding document from scratch and Hakeem Jeffries would congratulate them.

The EC is as gerrymandered as the states have become. Its based on census data. Thats why its a hot topic for the Repugnants in their attempt to cheat their way to relevency.

The electoral college is archaic! We do not need this in 2025! No matter where a man resides, city or in the middle of Timbuctoo, in the forest like Jeremiah Jackson.. he can vote! Where there is a will there IS a way to get your vote in. Count the votes, period.

Both were in the right wing talking points. First election I was involved with was the’68 presidential election. Two years later working for our Congressman. In ‘72 as a freshman I worked for Muskie I was one of the 18 to 20 year old delegates to the DNC. So I was extremely involved in politics

No it was created for two no longer valid reasons. First being that counting 100% of the votes was a difficult process. When they had the preponderance of the votes they assigned the Electoral College votes. Then they could have the electors from around the states meet in the state capitol.

Sadly we probably can't get rid of it, take a constitutional amend to do that. Instead we need to get states, who control how electoral votes are awarded, to change from winner take all to a percentage won type system. This would be easier and faster to do. Well, maybe faster...

This one gets a like just for adding Bush. INSANE to argue he isn't up there with Donald Trump in terms of how bad he was. The fucking patriot act?! 2 wars with fuck-all planning post missiles? I mean getting rid of Saddam I can get behind but FUCK man, THINK.

Shouldn’t really be possible here, our system is called First Past the Post, whichever Party wins 326 seats forms the Government as there are only 650 seats, however the winning party can win lots of seats by slim margins, while the opposition might win fewer seats but by massive majorities.

My very first paper for my Intro to Political Science course in 1971 as a freshman was to abolish the Electoral College. I outlined a collection of reasons (well researched) why it was no longer needed or necessary to ensure reflective elections. The reasons haven’t changed in all these years.

What gets me most about 2024 election is that Trump won the popular vote. So I can't say like I did after 2016 he got the presidency via an outdated electoral college system. He had 2M more votes than Kamala.

"Donald Trump won by activating a base of voters who chose his racism, misogyny, and xenophobia over unity and democracy. Kamala Harris’ campaign didn’t fail; voters failed Harris. This result was not a reflection of her ability to lead but of voters’ ability to trust women..."

Latino men thought he wouldn't really do much beyond extra border patrol (as he did last time). They were wrong. Add in the impact on jobs and higher costs/affordability, they are now looking to swing elections for Dems in 2026.
