this post has gotten a lot of attention so i need to make three things clear 1. trans rights now 2. the only "retro" consoles are actually the throwback handheld doodads everyone has now 3. trans rights forever

It's a little bit subtle, but the impression I got from watching the livestream (and looking up some of the words) it was less "is wii/ps3 retro now?" and more "this show is older than these consoles. should we allow these games on Game Center CX?"

Hey I think it counts easily but the debate has sort of shifted online to “retro is an aesthetic” which is an observation I really don’t like because it’s the one companies are adamant on selling you, but the Wii always gets away with it because it’s not hd 👺

yea i dunno where retro as an aesthetic comes in, it shouldnt anyways, the xbox 360 also came out a full year prior to the wii, that shit was 'new' when snes was retro by 20 years, it deserves to be retro too

I don't love the idea that "retro is an aesthetic" either but I'm similarly unconvinced that it should be a moving target based on a specific length of time. I do think you have to factor in how little has changed since the 360 era compared to how much had changed then since the '80s

Retro is about working both with and around the limitations of the hardware. The Megadrive and SNES, despite both being 16 bit consoles, can't do the things the others can. The XBox 360 and PS3, and everything after, are just computers with joysticks instead of keyboards. They can't be "retro".

also design sensibilities. Calling something like the PS3 or 360 retro feels odd since so many games are still trying to be Uncharted/Last of Us, Dark Souls or Far Cry 3. Games haven't really changed since that generation.

I think when the kids of that era talk and attach to things a lot of folks will have to reckon with the notion of this not quite being right. It’s how it imprints in our minds as kids

I just have trouble with something like GTAV being a retro game simply because young adults have a nostalgic attachment to it. If it's purely age and what generation is playing it then there's no conversation. Age is what it is. I just think it feels off design-wise.

Watching my fellow millennials struggle with getting old is kind of funny. We were quick to label the Atari and NES as retro when the PS2 gen came out (I was already heavily in the emulation scene at the time) but now that our time has come we're inventing excuses not to call things retro lol

its wild though realizing that the Simpsons s1-6 commentary is older now than those seasons were at the time they recorded the commentary (they're constantly exclaiming "ive forgotten so much in 10+ years")

Wii got added to retroachievements in April and they're looking at adding ps3 support in the next couple years, it's fuckin over for us oldheads

Truly appreciate the fact that Sanae now represents the inevitable feeling of dread and confusion imposed on us by the passage of time.

the Wii is a GameCube with a ram upgrade. I can understand it being retro. The 360 and PS3 though? Those were the original platforms of the current GTA and Elder Scrolls. They're the point where games stopped radically changing every generation and just got more graphics horsepower.
