This is pretty wild... the average global sea surface temperature (outside of the polar regions) is still above 70°F (21.1°C) through the end of September. This is significantly above the prior record. We'll cover this in our October climate briefing: climatecentral-org.zoom.us/webinar/regi... 🌊

Update, a few weeks later.Sea Surface temperatures have slipped - at about the same slope as 2015. There is a recent wiggle still being resolved as more data comes in.

I think a comparison or 2026 to the El Niño arrival years of 1997, 2015 and 2023 provides an interesting look at similar ENSO situations AND the steady warming over nearly 30 years.

Is this consistent with the below, expressing it in anomaly terms? bsky.app/profile/clim...

Breaking News! Code Yikes! September 2026 finished second hottest on record, averaging 1.63°C above the 1850-1900 baseline. 2023 still holds the top spot, with an anomaly of 1.74°C. The Climate Casino is taking the OVER on 1.80°C for October. Stay tuned!
