A helpfully clear exchange here Hasan: "So your argument is that [Minnesota ICE protesters] should stay at home because immigration is a salient issue for Donald Trump. Opposing ICE is only going to help Trump. Wait until we win the election in 2028." Yglesias: "Yes that is what I would have said"

1) Yes, you should pick your battles before an election. It's risky and hard to change minds 6 months before an election. But the other 18 months is when you change their minds - and the left did, in the wake of Minneapolis!

2) Yes, you should focus as much as possible on winning issues and especially on winning issues that target swing voters but... ICE is one of those issues! If the Dems win the Tex Sen seat, it will largely come due to flipped Latino votes, and guess why they're mad? www.yahoo.com/news/politic...

yahoo.comMany Latinos are done with Trump. The shift is especially striking in TexasLatino voters are souring on the GOP, fueled by frustration over rising costs and the Trump administration's aggressive approach to immigration enforcement.

3) Yes, you should focus on the strongest issues for swing voters but... you don't control the debate. Your opponent is going to try to elevate his side's strongest topic (which is still, polling suggests, immigration!) so you damn well better have a response ready.
