There are lots of reasons why the Democratic Party is likely never going to die that have to do with entrenched money and power but don't forget one huge factor is that the alternatives are run by morons.

NEW: DSA's National Political Committee passed two resolutions today aimed at Los Angeles mayoral candidate Nithya Raman, beginning processes that could result in DSA-LA being forced to rescind its endorsement of her this weekend and/or Raman herself being expelled from DSA by January.

Donald Trump bulldozed the white house and is threatening to do the same to the Kennedy Center but the thing you're concerned about definitely seems like the thing you should be covering instead

No. This is dooming for nothing. Lula *did* end up cruising to re-election, it was called an hour after polls closed. The fact that he managed to pull that off when everything was pointing to a Bolsanaro win is not terrifying, it's inspiring. Stop looking at things through the worst possible lens.

Grim but in absolutely no way surprising.

Don Moynihan@donmoyn.bsky.social

Pretty grim footnote to West's career that he ended up serving the richest man in the world's successful attempt to restore white nationalism to the US government.

I’d say Trump isn’t as good at influencing foreign elections as Putin, but I dunno, the Serbia results are a huge defeat for Putin. He’s lost both Orban & Vucic in a year.

trying to figure out when the world went sideways and I think it’s when Popeyes stopped giving you a cup of gravy when you ordered chicken tenders

Just remembering when Kamala tried to get Joe Rogan to put her on the air, just so at least some people in that audience would get exposure to the idea that she's not a crazy person.

I watched the original Friday the 13th, the original Nightmare on Elm Street and then on a whim, cut straight to Freddy vs. Jason and let me tell you, the tonal whiplash on THAT transition was quite insane.

There's a lot of really stupid people on the Bsky today saying that Political Purity Is Good, and let me tell you, these people are wrong, these people are idiots, and these people are so much the reason why the left can't build persistent power in this country that you wonder if they're GOP plants.

Political Purity is poison. Get the Democrats into office on November 3rd and save your belly aching for November 4th. This will be vastly better to your cause than any Republican, and gives a theoretical President AOC much greater odds for enacting meaningful change in 2029.

Also, if you're running 'both parties are the same' after the last 10 years of politics, we can safely assume that you have shittier understanding of politics than your average sea cucumber.

The shocking thing about the 2020 primary being won by Biden winning the black vote and the south is that it's exactly why Clinton won the primary in 2016 and pretty much none of the other candidates learned a damn thing from the experience.

This is part of why I expect it to be Harris. The 2028 rogue's gallery is stumping in New Hampshire like it's 2008 and she seems to be the only one smart enough to head down South.

Dear Donald, this is your National Republican Senate Committee leader writing I am here to tell you to absolutely keep saying this shit

Trump: "While oil prices are temporarily high ... the United States oil and gas business is making hundreds of billions of dollars"

Yes and also this sort of 'uniparty' nonsense feels so hollow deployed in the midst of a national stove-touching. It turns out the difference between a 'milquetoast corporate Democrat' and Trump was really big! President Harris would not be driving trans soldiers out of the military!

youtubers, streamers, podcasters, etc are always on this beat bc they don't know how anything works & know that if they say something like this, their audiences will lap it up now & also 3 years later when they point to total gay commie revolution not happening and go "see? i was right!"

Whatever you think of the benefits of AI and disregarding the casual misogyny, the idea that it will benefit the working class more than the college educated is fucking stupid.

“Palantir cofounder and CEO Alex Karp states ‘AI will undermine the influence of highly educated, often female voters and give it to working class men. We have feminine energy running our cities and our courts,’ he complained.”

Going to a dentist is like going to a dentist in a Star Trek episode compared to when I was a kid. Their imaging tools are so much better than they used to be, and they can print a new crown within an hour.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

A helpfully clear exchange here Hasan: "So your argument is that [Minnesota ICE protesters] should stay at home because immigration is a salient issue for Donald Trump. Opposing ICE is only going to help Trump. Wait until we win the election in 2028." Yglesias: "Yes that is what I would have said"

5) This ignores the moral imperative of 'we're currently locking lawful American citizens in concentration camps and shooting people who protest it'. And we SHOULDN'T ignore it. There's a lot you just have to live with until political winds blow your way. This Nazi shit should not qualify.

But even IGNORING point #5, and looking it solely as a pragmatic, calculating, political math exercise, Matt's point is pretty dumb. ICE is unpopular, and especially unpopular with some swing key voters (latinos, independents, suburban women). Pretending this issue is toxic is Not The Way.

4) The part that really rankled me was 'wait until 2028'. Even if you believe we should back off until after the election, it's CRUCIAL to turn up the heat in 2027. If we don't make concentration camps on American Soil toxic, it will be status quo for the GOP candidate in 2028.

Voters change, but they only change if we do the legwork. We need to be spending 2027 making and winning the argument on ICE, trans rights, and UHC, among other things, so that in 2028, we have an electorate better positioned to support these causes.

3) Yes, you should focus on the strongest issues for swing voters but... you don't control the debate. Your opponent is going to try to elevate his side's strongest topic (which is still, polling suggests, immigration!) so you damn well better have a response ready.

2) Yes, you should focus as much as possible on winning issues and especially on winning issues that target swing voters but... ICE is one of those issues! If the Dems win the Tex Sen seat, it will largely come due to flipped Latino votes, and guess why they're mad? www.yahoo.com/news/politic...

1) Yes, you should pick your battles before an election. It's risky and hard to change minds 6 months before an election. But the other 18 months is when you change their minds - and the left did, in the wake of Minneapolis!

it’s worth noting that there has not been a major federal election season that did not turn Stupid As Shit two weeks before election time.

They're throwing spaghetti at the wall. It doesn't mean it's not really dangerous - and whatever they try, we'll be prepared to counter - but folks should be clear that this is not some well-orchestrated highly competent plan unfurling.

all across the country, about half the people running are realizing that the polling shows they’re fucked, and they have to do anything to try to change the trajectory. ‘tis the season for stupid Hail Marys.

This is going to be not taken well by the antivaxxers who think vaccines aren’t real, mRNA is the devil, melanoma is caused by sunscreen not the sun and that constantly post stupid shit like ‘they found a cure for COVID in 12 months but can’t find a vaccine for cancer?’

Okay, I”m now rewatching the original Friday the 13th and it really is a case of a film that is so classic and central to two decades of slasher films after that that it feels so… cliched. Like, it *is* the horror zeitgeist of the 80s. (It’s also not great)
