I’m still in Halloween mode but the craft stores have all jumped to the winter holidays so I guess y’all can get ready for gift giving. Especially with wrapping paper like this.

Jer Thorp@jerthorp.bsky.social

There are 402 species of parrots in the world and each of them have a feather on this wrapping paper. The colors are extracted from Wikipedia descriptions, which means they are DEFINITELY not anatomically correct but they are wonderful. jerthorp.me/wrap 🦜🪶

Excellent night for atmospheric phenomena! Not just moondog and tangent arc, but also faint circumzenithal arc! First time for lunar cza for me!

It’s officially autumn and I’m roasting coffee. The shortening of the days is a little intimidating but the cooler weather is welcome. I mowed the lawn today in advance of the wet weather predicted for the weekend.

I hear it’s #fossilfriday and we recently went to Florida, mostly to look for fossils. (Yep, got some shark teeth.) We did some beach combing in between scheduled activities and found these lovely little oysters.

I recently got back from vacation in Florida and I really enjoyed watching the dock pets. I’m more used to egrets being silent hunters than greedy beggars.

Petrichor!

Emma Mitchell@silverpebble2.bsky.social

Part of petrichor, the delish earthy smell released when rain hits parched ground, is geosmin,a compound from soil bacteria-human👃s can detect it in lower concentrations than sharks can detect blood in water. Seeking out water on dry plains was essential for our ancestors. Here’s a geosmin molecule:

I’m sitting here by the marsh. The tide is high and the egrets are standing around in the sun, preening. Earlier when it was low, the yellowlegs were running across the mud and eeping.

Here are a few more views showing both sides of the shells. Our guides said these brachiopods are normally thicker. This one may have been compressed at some point.

The other day, I stumbled across a t-shirt that said "the trans agenda is an average lifespan," and boy, if that doesn't sum up a lot.

When you’re looking for nudibranchs and there’s another little white spot down lower in the pool but you say “those aren’t cerata!”

** Baby sea urchin doot doot doot ** The test (shell) of this one is only about 2-3 mm across, giving it an apparent size of about 5 mm across (lego bump size) with a halo of tube feet around

We’re getting a good thunderstorm which is going to make weeding so much easier tomorrow! Also it smells so nice out right now. In other garden news, my mullein are starting to bloom!

When Luna wants to be brushed she chirps and leads me to her brushy spot. She loves it and sometimes even helps guide the brush where she wants it to go. I do a better job when I’m not holding a phone in the other hand though!

Yesterday we went for a walk after the volunteer dinner at Teatown Lake Reservation where I am a nature guide. We saw a beaver, a couple of great blue herons, a duck family, a turtle, fish, deer, a green frog, and so many wood frogs that we stopped counting. It was absolutely delightful.

Wood frogs are neat.

The beaver was not pleased we were there. It sounded an alarm with its tail and then swam parallel to the trail monitoring us until we were out of range. I’m a little sorry we upset it but it was magical to witness.
